A new lane, a new hub, a press release full of the usual language about visibility, reliability and patient outcomes. Read in isolation, it is a story about cold boxes and flight schedules. Read against the backdrop of the most aggressive shift in U.S. pharmaceutical trade policy in a generation, it is something more revealing: a glimpse of how supply chains are quietly rewiring themselves around tariffs, and how logistics infrastructure is becoming a strategic instrument rather than a back-office cost.

The core promise of Air ThermoDirect is deceptively simple. Most temperature-controlled pharma shipments today rely on so-called active containers: powered, refrigerated units that maintain their own internal climate, plus a tail of passive packaging, gel packs and contingency handling. They work, but they are expensive to lease and reposition, heavy, carbon-intensive, and operationally complex. DSV’s pitch is to minimize the time a shipment spends in uncontrolled environments – on tarmacs, in warehouses, between handoffs – and to remove the complexity of active containers wherever possible. The result, the company says, is a cold chain that is more predictable, more scalable, and lower in cost, emissions and operational uncertainty across critical lanes.
The executives framing the launch were explicit about its place in a larger network rather than a one-off route. Kenneth Källström, DSV’s executive vice president and global head of healthcare, said the Indianapolis operations would “play a pivotal role in the global Air ThermoDirect healthcare network, enhancing end-to-end visibility and control across pharma manufacturing regions in the US, Europe, the Americas, and APAC,” adding that strengthening these connections would help ensure “life-saving therapies move with greater speed, reliability, and integrity.”

Notably, DSV has not publicly detailed flight frequency, aircraft type, or the carrier providing lift on the lane, and those operational specifics will matter a great deal for shippers evaluating the service. What the company has communicated is intent: a repeatable, scheduled, pharma-grade connection between a European gateway and a fast-growing American life-sciences cluster, run under DSV’s own quality umbrella rather than left to the vagaries of belly capacity and ad-hoc handling.
Why Luxembourg and why Indianapolis
Neither endpoint is an accident. Luxembourg punches far above its size in air cargo, anchored by Cargolux and a dense cluster of forwarders and pharma handlers that have invested heavily in good-distribution-practice (GDP) certified facilities. For European pharmaceutical exporters – and Europe is the dominant source of medicines flowing into the United States – Luxembourg functions as a consolidation gateway with the cold-storage infrastructure and customs throughput to move high-value, temperature-sensitive freight reliably.
Indianapolis is the more telling choice. The city has spent the past decade turning itself into one of the United States’ fastest-growing life-sciences and healthcare-logistics hubs. Central Indiana’s concentration in pharmaceutical manufacturing runs at roughly seven times the national average, anchored by Eli Lilly, which is headquartered in the city and has committed more than $13 billion to build the Lilly Medicine Foundry in nearby Lebanon, Indiana. Indianapolis International ranks among the top ten cargo airports in the United States and sits alongside the second-largest FedEx air hub in the world, giving it the runway capacity, ramp access and onward-distribution reach that pharma freight demands.
DSV is also not the first mover here, which underscores the point. DHL Global Forwarding opened a pharma-focused logistics facility at Indianapolis International with direct ramp access and a transatlantic freighter link to Liège; DB Schenker – now part of DSV – has operated cold-room and controlled-room-temperature space in Indianapolis since 2006, precisely because of its proximity to Eli Lilly; and rivals such as Geodis have been adding pharma cross-dock capacity at U.S. gateways. In other words, the smart money in pharma logistics has been converging on Indianapolis for years. In 2023 the United States imported roughly $203 billion in pharmaceutical products, and about 73% of that came from Europe – led by Ireland, Germany and Switzerland. A fourth, quieter dynamic deserves attention: clinical and pre-commercial logistics are largely indifferent to finished-goods tariffs, yet they move on the same lanes. Investigational medicinal products, comparator drugs, biological samples and trial kits shuttle constantly between European and U.S. research sites, and they are among the most temperature-sensitive and time-critical freight in existence. As pharmaceutical companies expand U.S. footprints to chase the onshoring incentive, the volume of this research-stage traffic between European hubs and American clusters like Indianapolis tends to grow regardless of where finished-product duties land. A dedicated, quality-assured corridor is well suited to capture exactly this resilient, high-margin flow – one that sits largely outside the tariff crosshairs while still benefiting from the same infrastructure built to serve commercial shipments.
None of this means DSV designed Indy Wings as an explicit tariff play; the public messaging is squarely about temperature integrity and emissions. But strategy and circumstance rhyme. A dedicated Luxembourg–Indianapolis pharma corridor is exactly the kind of asset that pays off whether trade flows shift toward more finished-goods imports under negotiated low rates, or toward more intra-company movement as manufacturing reshores. It is, in effect, a hedge dressed as a cold box.
The cold-chain economics that make the lane bankable
Strip away the policy overlay and the underlying business still has to stand on its own – and it does. The economic waste in pharmaceutical cold chains is staggering. Industry estimates, including widely cited figures from IQVIA, put annual losses from temperature excursions in the range of $20 billion to $35 billion in spoiled or wasted product. Roughly one in eight pharmaceutical shipments still experiences a temperature excursion at some point in its journey, and the World Health Organization has estimated that nearly a quarter of vaccines are degraded by the time they reach their destination.
Crucially, most of that loss is not caused by equipment failure. It stems from human error and a lack of visibility – the handoffs, dwell times and uncontrolled gaps that DSV’s Air ThermoDirect model is explicitly designed to compress. That is the wedge: if you can shrink the time product spends exposed and reduce reliance on failure-prone active units, you attack the largest, most addressable source of loss in the system.
The market tailwind is equally clear. The global cold-chain logistics market is projected to approach $505 billion by 2032, propelled by the growing share of biologics, cell and gene therapies, and precision medicines – products that are both extraordinarily valuable and extraordinarily fragile. Layer rising tariff values on top of rising product values, and the willingness to pay for guaranteed integrity only increases. A lane that credibly reduces excursion risk on high-value transatlantic pharma is bankable on fundamentals alone, before a single tariff argument is made.
DSV’s scale and the competitive field
Context on the company sharpens the significance of the move. In April 2025, DSV completed its roughly €14.3 billion acquisition of Schenker, a deal that doubled the Danish group’s size and lifted combined revenue to around €41.6 billion, with some 160,000 employees across about 90 countries. The acquisition made DSV the largest global freight forwarder by turnover – and, just as relevantly for this story, it folded Schenker’s long-standing Indianapolis pharma footprint into the DSV network. The unresolved questions
Several uncertainties temper the optimism. The most obvious is policy volatility. The Section 232 pharma regime has already been reshaped once by litigation – the Supreme Court’s February 2026 rejection of the IEEPA tariffs forced the pivot to Section 122 – and further legal challenges, deal renegotiations, and annex revisions are likely. A lane optimized for one tariff configuration could face a materially different one within a quarter. Trade-dependent infrastructure investments are being made against a moving target.
There is also a demand-direction risk. If onshoring succeeds at scale, the long-run trajectory for finished-drug imports into the United States is downward, at least for the patented products in tariff scope. DSV’s bet implicitly assumes that intra-network flows, clinical-trial logistics, API movement and the sheer stickiness of European manufacturing will more than offset any decline in straightforward finished-goods imports. That is a reasonable assumption – manufacturing relocation takes years and rarely fully displaces existing sites – but it is an assumption nonetheless.
Operational opacity is a third caveat. Without disclosed frequency, capacity and carrier arrangements, it is hard to gauge how much real lift Indy Wings adds versus how much it formalizes flows DSV already handled. And the broader air-cargo market is tight: DSV itself has flagged limited wide-body freighter capacity, which constrains how quickly any premium pharma lane can scale when demand spikes.
What to watch – and what it means

It says that sophisticated logistics players expect transatlantic pharma trade to remain large and lucrative even under tariffs – reshaped, repriced, and more compliance-intensive, but not extinguished. And it says that American life-sciences clusters like Indianapolis are becoming the gravitational centers around which both manufacturing and logistics reorganize, accelerated by the 0% onshoring incentive baked into the tariff structure.
The practical watch list is short. Watch the litigation that could again redraw the statutory basis for the tariffs. Monitor whether DSV and its rivals expand, contract or re-route their U.S. pharma gateways as those rates settle.
